SUNSHINE PSYCHIATRY
Our Approach
Sunshine Psychiatry helps children and young adults in the Virginia and Maryland community reach their greatest potential by addressing their mental health challenges through expert psychotherapy and medication management. We tailor our care to each patient based on comprehensive, continual evaluation of their needs – from their stressors, symptoms and medication regimen, to their family and social history, support systems and life goals. We emphasize active discussion and involvement of the patients (and their parent or guardian if the patient is under 18) in care planning, and want them to be empowered to make informed treatment decisions, personalized to their unique concerns and wants.
We focus on caring for patients age 5 to 30 through telemedicine for patients’ convenience and to leverage children’s and young adults’ ease with online interactions.

Sunshine Psychiatry was founded by Dr. “Katarina” Doan-Thu Nguyen following nearly a decade of practice caring for children and young adults dealing with a wide range of mental health challenges. Earlier in her career, Dr. Nguyen served as Chief Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellow at the University of Virginia Medical Center, having completed her residency and fellowship at UVA after graduating from UVA Medical School as well as years of pediatric psychiatry care and supervision of more junior physicians at the Commonwealth Center for Children & Adolescents, the UVA Child & Family Psychiatry Clinic and other clinical settings. A trusted expert in providing consistently top-rated patient care, Dr. Nguyen continues to train mental health professionals, serving as an Adjunct Professor for the UVA Psychiatry Program and a Clinical Preceptor for psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioners at numerous universities.
